“Majority of the residents here are poor. In terms of food, which is a prime necessity, they only eat once a day. If there are medicines, which mostly come from donations, still, they don’t suffice,” said Barangay Chairman Erwin Sembrero as he described the living condition of the residents of Planza Island, half an hour off the port of Babatngon, Leyte, Philippines.

The Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church Of Christ), through the Ecclesiastical District of Leyte East, took the initiative to help residents of the island through an outreach program on September 3, 2022. Held at the Brgy. Planza basketball covered court, the brethren-volunteers, led by ministers and ministerial workers, handed out relief packages containing rice, grocery items, medicines, slippers, and solar lights.

“A huge thank you to the Iglesia Ni Cristo for coming into our island and extending to us the help that we need,” said Alfredo Ilgaot, one of the residents.

Mario Rabara, another beneficiary and a father of seven, expressed, “The help that you gave will really go a long way especially for us who experience poverty.”

Part of the outreach program was the study of God’s words led by Brother Lemuel Solano, minister of the gospel. He taught a Bible-based lesson pointing out what’s more important than just earning a living: seeking out and joining the true Church Of Christ to attain salvation on Judgment Day. — With reports from INC News Section
