The KADIWA and Binhi organizations in the Ecclesiastical District of Calgary, Canada hosted on April 24, 2022 a basketball and volleyball clinics for its members from various local congregations. It was held at the Junior Varsity Training Center (JVCentre), an all-inclusive sportsplex along Smed Lane S.E., in Calgary.
Mark Sanchez, a long-time basketball enthusiast and the KADIWA president of the Local Congregation of Spruce Meadows, led the basketball clinic for beginners. He explained that aside from its health benefits, team sports foster camaraderie and cooperation. “They [the brethren] were able to associate with our fellow youth, exhibiting teamwork, and unity as well, and love of the brotherhood,” he said.
After a warm up routine led by other KADIWA basketball enthusiasts, Sanchez taught the participants basic ball handling, passing, and shooting.
For the volleyball clinic, Jolina Galera and Brainard Amay, KADIWA district vice president and Falconridge Congregation KADIWA president, respectively, led the participants, divided into two groups, in basic volleyball drills following some needed warm ups.
Jericho Calvelo, a Binhi from the Local Congregation of Downtown, commented that the activity was a great “way of coping with stress, and mental health problems.”
“I love attending activities like this not only to see my fellow brethren after these pandemic restrictions. This is also my way of inviting my nonmember friends to attend our activities in the Church Of Christ,” enthused Joy Cabayao, KADIWA member. — With reports from INC News Section
