A few days after tropical cyclone Nando exited the Philippine area of responsibility, the Ecclesiastical Districts of Cagayan West and Ilocos Sur held Care for Humanity events on September 28, 2025 for the residents in its scope who were affected.
The super typhoon thus caused widespread flooding, landslides, extensive damage to homes, agriculture, and power outages across Northern Luzon provinces, like in Cagayan and Ilocos Sur.
Cagayan West provided care packages at the Claveria Congregation’s house of worship compound, while Ilocos Sur at the Narvacan and Sto. Domingo congregations’ compounds.
District supervising ministers, Brother Rodel Barrera and Brother Marco Luisito Tamayo, respectively, led these humanitarian activities, in which ministers, ministerial workers, and Church officers assisted.
Beneficiaries received care packages containing rice, canned goods, and coffee. Combining both districts, a total of 3,200 care packages were distributed.
“Our district wasn’t directly hit, but many residents suffered damage to their homes and livelihoods,” observed Ilocos Sur District Christian Family Organizations overseer Brother Ruben Santiago.
“Crops were submerged in the flood and so cannot be harvested as planned by the end of September, significantly reducing the expected produce,” narrated Society of Communicators and Networkers International officer Ronald Quitasol from Pandan Congregation, Ilocos Sur District. “Be that as it may, I remain joyful and grateful for the support from the Church Administration.”
“Despite the recent calamity, brethren here in Cagayan have been thankful for the love and care shown by the Church Administration, which immediately extended aid to meet our urgent needs,” Brother Barrera remarked. “We will be holding more socio-civic activities like this, for the remaining areas in our district likewise afflicted.” — With assistance from Sonny Jake Canoasi and Edlyn Antolin
