Society of Communicators and Networkers International (SCAN) officers and members in the Ecclesiastical District of Calamian, Philippines, conducted a tree-planting activity within Mabentangen Watershed, that is located at Brgy. 6, Coron, Palawan, on August 23, 2025. A total of 100 taluto (Pterocymbium tinctorium) seedlings were planted.

Led by the district supervising minister Brother Gerson Canlas, the participants traveled six kilometers from Coron house of worship compound, where they first received instructions and reminders, to the activity’s venue. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) officer Roy Pascual reminded them about the right distance and the proper procedure in planting.

About the significance of planting the said seedlings, Pascual explained, “Taluto (winged-boot) trees are beneficial for watersheds due to its rapid growth, especially its role in reforestation, which help stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and improve water quality by filtering rainfall. It is also a crucial food source for the Philippine cockatoo.”

Regarding the relevance of the venue, another DENR officer, Jeff Castro, shared, “Planting trees within watersheds help provide potable water for the residents in nearby community. Doing so also creates vital habitats for diverse plant and animal species, fostering a healthy and resilient ecosystem.” He is also a SCAN officer from Mabentangen Group Worship Service.

Overall, “this activity aimed at not only teaching the brethren the importance of preserving nature but also encouraging them to always participate in all other activities in the Church, thereby always pleasing the Lord God,” said district Christian Family Organizations overseer Brother Melchor Bermundo, who was also present in the activity. — With reports from Jed Ceder Dosdos
