The Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church Of Christ), through the Ecclesiastical District of Hong Kong (HK), extended prompt aid to fire victims in Hong Kong on November 28, 2025.
Said to be “the city’s deadliest fire in nearly 80 years” (bbc.com), the Hong Kong Fire Department said that the fire started before 3 p.m. of November 26. From Wang Cheong House, a 32-story residential building and one of eight tower blocks making up the Wang Fuk Court complex, the fire spread rapidly from building to building eventually leading to hoisting of No. 5 alarm, the highest level in Hong Kong. As of November 30, 146 people were confirmed dead, over 200 missing.
In the wake of such disaster, district supervising minister Brother Celestino Bacsafra led fellow ministers, and brethren in the turnover of more than 100 relief packages to Side By Side HK. Represented by Mr. Christian Chan, the said non-governmental organization will hand out the donations, which contain toiletries, canned goods, noodles, and biscuits, among others, to the displaced families evacuated at the Tai Po Community Centre.
“The Iglesia Ni Cristo has always been committed to helping people, whether members or nonmembers alike. This is our way of obeying God’s teaching written in the Bible—to extend care and compassion to those in need,” said Brother Bacsafra.
“Meeting urgent needs is one of the most meaningful ways to serve neighbors in crisis,” said Mr. Chan. On behalf of the victims, he added, “The effort of the Iglesia Ni Cristo reflects the community’s commitment to providing practical, immediate support to those who lost their homes and belongings in the tragic blaze.”
“Receiving these made us feel that someone cares for us,” Li Wei, one of the residents affected, shared in an interview. — With reports from Arlynn Bartolome
