FOR MANY PEOPLE, living life to the fullest means realizing their ambitions in life, accumulating as much wealth as they can, enjoying life any way they want it, pursuing fame, influence, power, and the like. They think that inasmuch as life is brief, they might as well make the most of it.
Although we need to earn a decent living, provide for our daily needs, and find happiness and enjoyment in life, we must understand our reason for being. What is the purpose of our earthly existence? Were we created just to enjoy life the way we want to—to eat, drink, and be merry?
For us to fully grasp the very purpose of our existence, it is essential for us to know who created us and what He expects us to do. The Bible teaches:
“But you are our father, Lord. We are like clay, and you are like the potter. You created us.” (Isa. 64:8 Good News Translation)
“Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” (Ps. 100:2–3 New King James Version)
The Lord God created us and we were created with a distinct purpose—to serve Him with gladness.
Though it is the duty of people to serve the Lord God, it does not follow that they can just render service for Him in any way that they want to. God has set the right way of serving Him. In I Samuel 12:24, this is written:
“Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things He hath done for you.” (King James Version)
People should make efforts to serve and worship God but not in their own way. We should understand that in order for our services to be deemed worthy by God, we ought to abide by the standards set by the Almighty Father. He expects that people “serve Him in truth.” The truth being referred to is the word of God that sanctifies us (John 17:17). Thus, it is wrong to offer services to God that are just according to our own set of standards. Since it is the Almighty God whom we should serve, we serve Him in accordance with His words or the truth. By doing so, we will be sanctified or made holy.
Why do people need to be sanctified or made holy? Because this is God’s will and purpose in creating us. In Ephesians 1:4, Apostle Paul teaches:
“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. …” (New International Version)
God created man to be holy and blameless in His sight. So, it is very important for people to meet that expectation of God. However, it is also a biblical fact that all human beings, except the Lord Jesus Christ, have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God (I Pet. 2:21–22; Rom. 3:23 niv). How then can people meet God’s expectation of being holy and blameless before Him? Apostle Paul explained the way by which we can be redeemed and be forgiven of our sins. This is what he teaches:
“just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will … In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” (Eph. 1:4–5, 7 nkjv)
The Lord God knew that man whom He expects to be holy is weak and would fall into sin. That is why He gave His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, so that in Christ people can have redemption through His blood and thus, be forgiven of sins, so people can be made holy and sanctified before God.
People should make sure if they are among those who have been redeemed with the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 1:9–10, Apostle Paul clarified:
“having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.” (niv)
The Holy Scriptures declare that those who received redemption through the blood of Christ were gathered together in Him. This was further elucidated by Apostle Paul:
“And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” (Eph. 1:22–23 niv)
Those who received redemption and the forgiveness of sins are gathered in the body of Christ, which is the Church. What Church is the body of Christ and was redeemed by Christ’s blood? In Acts 20:28, Apostle Paul proclaimed:
“Take heed therefore to yourselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, to feed the church of Christ which he has purchased with his blood.” (Lamsa Translation)
By becoming members of the Church Of Christ, people can receive redemption and the forgiveness of sins and thus be made holy. This is the way for man to fulfill the very purpose of his existence:
“In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. … How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Heb. 9:22, 14 niv)
If we devote time and effort to meet our daily needs, we should all the more do so to fulfill the ultimate purpose of our very existence—to serve God Almighty, our Creator. So we must make sure to serve God in truth and be made holy. This can only be realized if we join and remain in the Church Of Christ until the end.
