Promoting resourcefulness especially when saving lives, Society of Communicators and Networkers (SCAN) International officers and members in the Ecclesiastical District of Bay Area California held an activity dubbed Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Rescue Equipment Showcase at the function hall of San Francisco Congregation on June 14, 2025.

A Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member, district SCAN president Gerwin Gitana served as the resource speaker. As the activity’s name signifies, he taught fellow SCAN officers on how to improvise rescue equipment, such as stretchers, tourniquet, climbing harness, and rescue buoy. Improvisation in a limited time, he explained, can greatly help on their being prepared and ready during calamities and the like, thus staying true to SCAN’s maxim, “Saving lives is our priority.”

“We must be ready at all times and know alternative ways to save those in need, especially when there’d be no available equipment around us during an emergency. That’s why this activity is timely,” Gitana said.

“I thank God for inspiring the Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo Manalo, and our Deputy Executive Minister, Brother Angelo Eraño Manalo,” expressed San Francisco Congregation SCAN officer Marynessa Banez. “They continue to launch activities like this so we can be equipped with skills that we need, which are useful, especially as we continue serving God,” she further stated.

District Christian Family Organizations overseer Brother Alfred Alexis Lorido supervised the activity. On his part, he exhorted SCAN members in the district to “keep on improving and acquiring skills that can all the more help them in performing their duties, which are beneficial to Church members and nonmembers alike, all for God’s glory.” — With reports from Sophia Trigonis of INC News Section
